Mood disorders

Mood disorders are a category of mental health conditions characterized by significant disturbances in a person’s emotional state or mood. They can affect how an individual feels, thinks, and behaves.

Symptoms may include:

There are several types of mood disorders, including:

    • Major depressive disorder: A person with this condition experiences persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed. Symptoms may include changes in appetite, sleep, and energy levels, as well as difficulty concentrating and feelings of worthlessness.
    • Bipolar Disorder: This condition is marked by extreme mood swings, ranging from periods of intense euphoria (mania or hypomania) to deep depression. These mood episodes can last for weeks or even months
    • Persistent depressive disorder: This disorder involves chronic feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and low self-esteem that last for at least two years.
    • Cyclothymic disorder: A person with this condition experiences numerous periods of hypomanic and depressive symptoms that last for at least two years.
      • Seasonal affective disorder (SAD): This is a type of depression that typically occurs during the winter months when there is less daylight.

    • Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD): This is a type of depression that occurs in women before their menstrual period and can include symptoms such as irritability, anxiety, and mood swings.

Mood disorders can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetic predisposition, environmental factors, and life events. Treatment may involve medication, psychotherapy, or a combination of both. It is important to seek help from a qualified mental health professional if you suspect that you or a loved one may be experiencing a mood disorder.
