Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that affects a person mood, energy, activity level, and ability to function. It is characterized by episodes of intense emotional highs, known as manic or hypomanic episodes, and episodes of deep sadness or hopelessness, known as depressive episodes.

Symptoms may include:

During a manic episode, a person may feel extremely happy, have racing thoughts, talk rapidly, and engage in impulsive behavior such as overspending, taking risks, or substance abuse. During a depressive episode, a person may experience feelings of sadness, worthlessness, and guilt, have difficulty sleeping, lose interest in activities they once enjoyed, and may even have thoughts of suicide.

Bipolar disorder can be managed with medications, therapy, and lifestyle changes, but it is a lifelong condition that requires ongoing treatment and support. It can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background.

The symptoms of bipolar disorder can vary depending on the type of episode a person is experiencing, whether it’s a manic, hypomanic, or depressive episode. Some common symptoms of each episode include:

Manic episode:

  • Feeling unusually happy, excited, or irritable
  • Having a lot of energy or feeling restless
  • Talking quickly or rapidly changing topics
  • Engaging in risky or impulsive behavior such as overspending, substance abuse, or sexual promiscuity
  • Feeling little need for sleep
  • Racing thoughts or ideas
  • Difficulty focusing or concentrating

Hypomanic episode:

  • Feeling happy or energetic
  • Increased creativity or productivity
  • Racing thoughts or ideas
  • Difficulty sleeping

Depressive episode:

  • Feeling sad, hopeless, or empty
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
  • Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much
  • Fatigue or loss of energy
  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

It’s important to note that not everyone with bipolar disorder experiences all of thesesymptoms, and the severity and frequency of the symptoms can also vary. A properdiagnosis and treatment plan should be determined by a mental health professional.
