Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition that is characterized by recurring, unwanted, and intrusive thoughts (obsessions) that lead to repetitive behaviors (compulsions) in an attempt to alleviate anxiety or prevent a feared outcome.

Symptoms may include:

Obsessions can take many forms

Fear of contamination, fear of harming oneself or others, fear of making a mistake, fear of religious or moral wrongdoing, and fear of losing control. These thoughts can be persistent, distressing, and time-consuming, often interfering with daily functioning and causing significant distress.

Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental acts that a person feels driven to perform in response to their obsessions. Examples include excessive cleaning or handwashing, checking and rechecking things like locks or appliances, counting, repeating phrases or prayers, and arranging or organizing items in a specific way. Compulsions may provide temporary relief from the anxiety caused by obsessions, but ultimately, they reinforce the cycle of obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors.

OCD is a treatable condition

Treatment typically involves a combination of therapy and medication. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is often used to help people with OCD learn to identify and challenge their irrational thoughts and to develop strategies to resist compulsions. Medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) can also be helpful in reducing symptoms of OCD.

It’s important to note that not everyone with OCD experiences all of these symptoms, and that the severity and frequency of symptoms can also vary. If you think you may have OCD, it’s important to seek professional help from a mental health provider.
